Falls detector

Is anyone aware of a falls detector that doesn’t require a monthly monitoring contract?

I like to go out for walks on my own every day. Pre stroke these were regularly up to 10 km and beyond often going across fields. Nowadays I stick to paths beside residential roads and are much shorter. I share my location on Google with my wife so she can always see where I am, but she can’t tell if I have had a fall.

All the pendants and other devices I have found all require you to subscribe to a monitoring service. I found a few apps and they all have monitoring services. I just want something that if I fall it will send a message to my wife’s phone.

As I now walk by roads, I would hope if I fall someone driving or walking past would stop and see if I needed help, but I also want my wife to be contacted. I have her in the emergency contacts on my phone, but it relies on the passer by knowing how to access them.

Hi Dave, I have used a fall detector alarm since my stroke 7 years ago. I pay for mine annually but you can also pay on a monthly basis if you prefer.

I use Life Connect 24 and would highly recommend. www.lifeconnect24.co.uk

I hope this is useful.

Hi Dave
I have an falls alarm pendant that i press when needing assistance. It is wi-fi and works upto 30m from the monitoring box. It costs £2.50 a week. If i am close enough to the box i can talk to a person and tell them what is wrong, they then send someone out or an ambulance. If they cannot speak to me they just send someone out

Hi Dave,

I have an Apple Watch Series 7 that has a feature called “fall detection”.

If you fall and become unconscious or unable to move it will automatically call 999 and the person on the other end will be able to see your precise location - without having to talk.

It can be a bit costly however there are no reoccurring fees, check it out: Use Fall Detection with Apple Watch – Apple Support (UK)

I think I know what @DaveB44 means. He’s just looking for a simple phone app that links him to his wife’s phone, so he can venture further off-road with peace of mind. It will detect if he has a fall while out on his walks, and will send an alert back to his wife and give his location if he does have a fall. And she can take it from there or maybe it could also call 999, perhaps. The app to be purchased outright with no middleman or subscription fees to phaff around with.

I’d love something like that for myself because I love wandering off and exploring on my walks

For anyone considering this, it might be worth reading this article before going down a completely independent rout free of assistance subscription. Particularly if you want to go walk through parks or countryside alone.

Yes, exactly that!

Or a pendant that connects to an app on my phone.

The article linked by @EmeraldEyes is useful. It gives several potential issues with using a fall alarm with a mobile. Hoever they probably don’t apply in my use case where my wife will be my contact and she lives with me. I also tell her when I am going for a walk and how long I think I’ll be.
