Dear all, my husband is due to have a cranioplasty on 17th Feb.
I’m really worried about a further stroke, another bleed, a relapse in rehabilitation progress.
Would love to hear of others experience of this operation and the benefits they have experienced and how quickly they recovered.
Gary is 49 and skull was removed 5 months ago following thrombectomy and subsequent brain swelling. He is now getting bad headaches, nausea and vomiting.
Thanks in advance!
Claire
I’m having a cranioplasty next week (11th Feb)and am also really worried about having a further stroke (I had one at the end of April last year)and so would feel reassured to hear from others who have had this procedure without having had any side effects
Hi Elaine, the surgeon who removed skull told me that the replacement part was very straightforward. Just to share the reassurance I’ve had. Let us know how you get on x
@Lara1 @ElaineCresswell i haven’t had one but have come across others who have on the Different Strokes Facebook page. It might be worth having a look there.
Good luck. Hope the ops go well.

Thanks Ann, just visited the Different Strokes FB page. Lots of reassuring post surgery posts ![]()
Thats brilliant. Hope that has put your mind at rest a bit.
Good luck for the op.

Hi Elaine, just wanted to ask how you’re getting on after your cranioplasty?
Gary had the cranioplasty and it went well. He is still groggy from the anaesthetic but has asked for a cooked breakfast
He should be back in the rehab unit in next few days.
Good to hear all went well & hope he enjoyed his cooked breakfast
xx
I’m feeling extremely tired - even after over a week of having had the surgery. I’m having headaches every day although they are not as bad now. I was very worried about having a further stroke but luckily this didn’t happen. I did have a few seizures whilst under anaesthetic but am on anti seizure medication now so further ones are unlikely.
Thanks for the update @ElaineCresswell , I’m glad you’re out the other side. Pleased the headaches have reduced and hopefully those you have are just you head ‘settling down’ (I’m no medic
)
Gary had his cranioplasty in Feb and all seems good now x
Sorry @ElaineCresswell and @Lara1 I’m coming to this discussion rather late but I had a craniectomy after a burst aneurysm.the implant became infected and had to be removed..I fell into a coma and PdOC doctors then suggested that I may be suffering from sunken flap syndrome where the loss of intracranial pressure causes cognitive decline,so they suggested a cranioplasty.which I had and I’ve been on the up ever since.i do hope that you both are also making gains do let us know.
Thank you for your message @Mich-mm. Coincidentally it is pretty much a year to the day that my husband had his cranioplasty.
After months of headaches these have now stopped and all is well head-wise.
17 months on from the stroke, whilst still wheelchair-bound, Gary has started to walk and is considering a return to work in some capacity.
He is sharper, better at scanning (left side neglect was an issue) and getting more adept at doing things with one hand - although this is really hard.
Best wishes
Claire (Lara)
Oh @Lara1 it brings me so much joy to read your message, i too had headaches after the cranioplasty but after a number of scans it was decided the operation went to plan and they did subside. Reading that he can walk and considering returning to work is marvellous.
