Coping with post stroke anxiety, sleeplessness and fatigue

Hello Anna, i had a stroke 9 weeks ago, and have recently been struggling with post stress anxiety, sleeplessness, loss of appetite and fatigue and wanted to hear from others regarding what they do or have done to manage it. I have a GP appointment tomorrow to discuss this matter, and just needed some guidance /advice.

I hope you can help

kind regards

Hi @MAUREENCAMPBELLWATTS

Welcome to the community, I’m sorry to hear about your stroke and the difficulties you’re facing.

You’ll find lots of advice here from fellow stroke survivors and I’m sure some will be along shortly to support with this. We do have some information on our website about the effects of stroke which may be helpful for you to have a read over before your appointment tomorrow.

It’s also a really good idea to write anything down that you want to discuss with your GP or any questions you have for them. It’s so easy to forget something when you’re there!

I hope you’ll find this community helpful for your ongoing recovery. If you need anything whilst you’re using the Online Community, please don’t hesitate to tag me using the @ symbol and my username.

@MAUREENCAMPBELLWATTS Hi & welcome to the community. Sorry you’ve had cause to join us but hopefully you’ll find it a useful place to be.

All the things you describe are pretty typical following a stroke. You’ll hear it many times but 9 weeks is no time at all in recovery terms. Most of what you describe should ease over time but it can take many months.

Loss of appetite is common and many find they lose weight so you need to keep an eye on that. Try & eat whether you want to or not. A little & often may be the way to go for now. Also, try fortifying your foods so you are consuming calories even if not the quantity required. Things like adding milk, cheese & butter to things, marvel powder etc. you could also try supplement drinks like ensure or complain.

Fatigue has to be managed & you need to plan, prepare & pace yourself. Everyone’s limits are different so you need to work out what is best for you. But at this stage rest is very important as your brain needs time to recover. Especially during the 1st 6 months of recovery.

Others will be along with more advice.

As Anna has said write down any questions you may have for the GP so you don’t forget to ask anything.

Best wishes

Ann

Why worry - anxiety will ruin your life more than another stroke would. Also, which would you prefer- a quick end via a stroke/heart attack or a slow lingering end via dementia or Parkinsons.

I’m afraid fatigue is almost universal post stroke. All you can do is learn to manage it.

Your other symptoms should settle over time.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear of your recent stroke, but as mentioned before, loss of appetite and fatigue is a major down side of recovery. I am 22 months post stroke now and still suffer weakness and fatigue and am trying to recover my right side after a haemorragic stroke. Life changes for all of us stroke survivors, but we manage to adapt, accept and learn to live with it. Don’t fight against it, just go with how you feel now. Sometimes I am in bed by 7pm as I’m just to tired or aching to sit up any longer. It does get you down of course, but we’re still here, the same person just with some extra problems we need to deal with,. Keep smiling, keep recovering and use this forum and the SA to help and guide you. It’s a wonderful friendly and helpful place to come to. I wish you well on the journey you are now undertaking, it will be bumpy and at times very uncomfortable, but you’ll feel better for trying and overcoming those issues that you find difficult. Just keep persevering . Take care and I hope the future gets brighter for you.
