Has anyone else got contractures and atrophy from not using their limbs while in a coma or recovering from the stroke. I’ve been told by a physio that I’m unlikely to walk again because my feet are no longer s
at right angles to my legs. He wouldn’t allow me to try to walk because he believed I’d brake my ankles if I did. I can’t find any research on this but it must be fairly common because we all go through a time of inactivity post-stroke. I. have an appointment to see an orthopaedic surgeon but it isn’t until September!
never say never
this is a fragile period for you
casual remarks sound like death sentences with no hope, no chance of reprieve.
a year or two sounds like a very long time
I promise you that you will look back and find you have managed things that now you imagine improbable, impossible.
Don’t be discouraged, there is a tomorrow, you will be in it, but no-one will know how it will turn out until we get there.
As the kids keep saying -
are we nearly there yet?
It is today, you made it this far.
Write down the truth, the thoughts you are having now. When you look back those words will be a mark from which you can measure and see just how far you have come.
I am aware of someone who is going to have surgery to correct a similar issue. They too have had a long wait. Hopefully your appointment in Sept will set the ball firmly rolling to get this rectified for you.
Thank you @mrsK.It’s warming to know of someone else in the same position, please let me know what the outcome is.
It’s highly possible to VASTLY improve the situation by consulting a foot and ankle orthopaedics specialist who may talk with you to explore the possibilities of appropriate tendon transfer surgery and what it could do/its limitations etc. Astonishing what can be done now days and no harm to just consult re possibilities. Dr Tom(Balchin - ARNI Director) says that in this regard, a superb man who has done lots of surgery to improve the lot of stroke survivors is Mr Martin Klinke at the London Foot and Ankle Clinic (London Bridge), amongst other consulting places. This is and can only be a suggestion/signpost and absolutely not clinical guidance - and of course your first port of call should be your GP
Thank you so much @pamella1.
