Hello all! I’m new! I was in hospital for another reason recently and they did a brain CT scan… weeks after discharge, I finally read my discharge notes, to read the word stroke…
I have developed a tremor months ago so saw my GP and I mentioned that the notes mentioned a stroke. Although he had the notes on the computer, he seemed surprised too!
I had an MRI which confirmed a chronic lacunar infarction. I had to chase the results myself…
I asked for a GP appointment about my tremor and the stroke.
The GP treated it like a common cold.
I’m not proud to say, I had been alcohol dependent for several years (not rolling drunk but needing to relax somehow) and still smoke 20 a day.
I was definitely still drinking 3 bottles of wine per day when I had the stroke.
Anyway I recently started OTC low dose aspirin as I am terrified of another stroke.
GP doesn’t want to put me on any blood thinners, says she believes I’m more at risk of bleeding than
clotting, because of alcohol. But as I said, I was drinking three bottles of wine daily when I had the stroke, and I’m not drinking now!
So I’m continuing aspirin, though now taking it every second day.
I’ve requested a referral to a neurologist, which she reluctantly agreed to.
So, I’m waiting…
Has anyone else here had a head tremor after a stroke?
Am I wrong to take low dose aspirin every two days?
Thanks! xxx

Hi @Musicgirl - welcome to the community which I am sure you will find supportive and educational.
Thank you for sharing your experiences and I expect it won’t be long before you get some answers to the questions you ask. Thank you also for being so open about your history
I myself can’t offer you anything specific as your situation is not something I am familiar with. The one thing I can say is do keep asking questions and do keep following up with the GP and neurologist. You can always ask questions on this forum.
Try not to worry - what has happened has happened. Look to the future and think of how you would like to live going forward. Help is available in many forms and if you seek ye shall find!
@Musicgirl hi and welcome to the community. It must have been a surprise to find out that you’d had a stroke after being in hospital for another reason. Well done on cutting down your alcohol intake that must have been a difficult thing for you to do but we’ll pay dividends in the long run.
As you have had a stroke would your GP be able to refer you to the stroke team as well as two neurology as the stroke team will be better able to advise about your stroke. In relation to whether you should continue Aspirin or not that is something that you will need to discuss with the medical professional and/or make your own mind up about. We can only talk from our own experiences on this forum and not knowing your full medical history it would be very wrong with us to give you advice in relation to this.
Hope that you are getting on okay and that things are progressing in the right direction for you.
I am not medically trained to answer your question regarding any medication. Good luck for the future. I have dealt a lot with people in the past regarding alcohol abuse. Its a disease and a dreadful one. It ruins lives.
