Carotid Endarterectomy

Hello ,

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I was wondering if anyone has had carotid endarterectomy surgery following a Stroke?

There are lots of stats and info online and there is only so much consultants can advise upon , but patient stories, experiences, insights would be valuable if possible .

Posting my question here is key because the added ‘ risk’ to this surgery is increased if the patient has already had a stroke . The op is for Asymptomatic Carotid. Having suffered a Deep Stroke.

Many thanks in advance .

Hi & welcome to the community @Delphine83 hope you are progressing ok after your stroke.

I’m afraid I know little about that procedure. Although I had a stroke caused by my carotid artery it was a tear rather than it being blocked so no surgery was needed.

Hopefully someone will be along soon that can offer you some advice.

Best wishes

Ann

Hello @Delphine83 and welcome to the community.

As you are looking for information from those who has already had a stroke, there is a good possibility you will get a good response to your post.

You can do a search on the forum using the search function :magnifying_glass_tilted_left: next to the icon for your Avtar on the top right of your screen (it may be different on your screen).

A search using keywords “carotid endarterectomy” returned 13 results. So you have at least 13 posts that may help you (see screen print - the “More…” button takes you to the other posts.

Wishing you all the best.

Welcome to the crew Delphine. Reminds me that there are several kind of 'stroke, I must admit I hadn’t heard of this procedure. I’m sure someone on here will have info for you. Best wishes Norma

Hello @Delphine83,I’m a little triggered as the teenagers say, because my exhusband’s partner has the same name. I didn’t have a carotid endarectomy, but I have had 3 brain surgeries, first to clip the aneurysm that subsequently burst,a craniectomy to remove part of my skull due to swelling of the brain, and then finally a cranioplasty to put a sheet of metal in place of the skull they took out.I was given a 1in 5 chance of survival for the latter. As far as I can tell your odds are much better and you don’t necessarily have a choice if you want to avoid further strokes.best of luck we are all rooting for you❣️ 🜁

Hello @Delphine83 and husband, yes the various surgeries have helped and I’m on the mend albeit in a nursing home but my mental acquity is thankfully intact and I’m surrounded by my three daughters and a few friends who thankfully visit me and love me.

Could you tell me when you suffered your stroke? Was it before your life-saving treatment?? what kind of a stroke did you suffer and how did it affect you??-when was this? Which Hospital did you have the treatments? Thank you for replying, warmest wishes,

Hello @delphineI had my stroke an aneurysm a blood vessel that bulges and subsequently bursts, which was either congenital(I was born with it or as a result of falling out of a moving car in my 20s.on the 1st May 2021’I was 49 my surgeries were straight after the event except for the cranioplasty the placing of wire mesh into my skull which was in February 2022.
