Can I drive after stroke and what's next?

I had have stroke on Aug 2024 and stopped to drive for 1.5months. As I know, I need to stop drive for a month per doctor advice. I feel everything better. With one month calendar days, I don’t need to tell DVLA and insurer. Can I start to drive if I feel okay? Do I need to do something from GP in order to get doctor approval before driving?

@dannyng2012.dn hi & welcome to the community. Sorry to hear you’ve had a stroke but hope you’re getting on ok.

Here is a link to the DVLA advice on driving after a stroke. That should tell you all you need to know.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes

Thanks for your information. I read below that I feel confused. I also noticed some can drive if they feel better by themselves. That’s why I would like to know if there is any procedure I need to follow.

You must stop driving for at least 1 month. You can restart only when your doctor tells you it is safe.

and I don’t have any the following.

  • weakness in your arms or legs
  • problems with your eyesight – for example visual field loss or double vision
  • problems with balance, memory or understanding

Then, should I compulsory to seek doctor’s advice before drive?

Thanks,
Danny

The link says you can restart if your dr says it is safe to do so therefore you need to get them to say you’re ok to drive. As far as I know if they say it’s ok you can just start driving again.

Please speak to your GP to get the go ahead.

Hi @dannyng2012.dn

Welcome & sorry you’ve had cause to join us.

The page Ann referred you to says:

Or to para phrase - …you must stop immediatley for at least 1 month and only restart when it is confirmed by a medical professional that it isvsafe to resume.

This evaluation should consider physical capability, eye sight & visual processing (eg no neglect), judgement & cognition. You might find you’ve emotional reactions to the challenges (hopefully not  )

It’s generally a good idea to inform your insurance company who should not express much interest.

The dvla’s online tect-chat is on
https://contact.dvla.gov.uk/driving-licence

And the medical professional’s DVLA guide is at

Hi @dannyng2012.dn

I had a haemorrhage stroke rather than a clot. Following the DVLA questions about stroke it told me I didn’t need to report my stroke to them, but if I have an accident I could be fined £1000 if I don’t let them know about a condition that affects my driving.

Although I am now six months after my stroke I feel I have problems with concentration and reactions, so I am going for a driving assessment next week.
