Brand new on here

Hello,

I am brand new on this site & lucky to have found it.
I suffered a stroke in October 2022 whilst I was in hospital having surgery for an aneurysm I have in my brain due to medical misadventure.
My surgery was successful but I was meant to be kept stable in the high dependency unit for 72 hours. Unfortunately I was moved far to early up to a neurosurgery ward to a room on my own and when I got up to try walking ,I fell and fractured my arm & suffered a blood clot to my brain & had a right sided CVA which left me completely paralysed on my left side. I spent a month in a rehab walk relearning how to walk ( after I was told I may not walk again )
I am now walking, on my bike, gardening and learning reformer pilates.
I still have a lot of weakness in my left arm but I’m slowly getting stronger.
I have done a lot of work & healing to accept what happened in hospital.
I still have daily fatigue and my eyesight has deteriorated so I try to avoid been on screens as much as I can.
I am coming up to my 3 year stoke anniversary this month so even though I am proud of my recovery it still makes ime feel emotional thinking about all that has happened.

I feel grateful to have found this site with like minded people who can understand each other.

Thank you for having me here

Hi Alice.
I’m sure there will be others soon to say welcome too. Glad you are here and thank you for sharing your story which sounds less than a fun journey. It does highlight how many of us have had poor experiences with hospitals and their care.
But more importantly it captures a story of determination and desire to succeed, this is the true spirit of overcoming the odds. Many of us suffer with both fatigue and emotional regulation but keep on going.
Hope that you enjoy your time here and wishing you well for your continued journey and recovery.

Hi Alice, & welcome

I just passed my 3 year anniversary a couple of weeks ago.
I had a long holiday in Kos Greece where I managed to swim, and, via Sunlight therapy, heal my eye (from MGD) by looking towards the setting Sun. Red Light Panel also helps. I also reduced intraocular pressure from 28 to 20 by Earthing 6 months ago. My eye is mending and I can now go outside without glasses (for the wind) for the first time since my stroke. From 0 second tolerance to the wind to being able to stay out all day.

Good luck with your journey, Roland

Hello @AliceP AND welcome. In effect you had two strokes the aneurysm and then the cva. I too had an aneurysm that subsequently burst leading to an haemorragic stroke. Like you i was left side paralysed. I can’t walk because i have EFD. And probably need to have surgery to loosen the muscles and tendons and ligaments, which have shortened due to lack of use. It brings me much joy to know you are back on your feet. Stay strong, Mich

This was a huge problem for me. Contracture, I’m told, sets in after a week and I was 44 days in hospital, in bed 99% of the time. I did (and still do) so many calf stretches to get my foot to dorsiflex more readily. While most would say I have avoided outright foot drop, I come close, and am always catching / snagging my toes end of my shoe of the ground. I will do a YouTube clip about this and how I overcame much (not all) of it.

Hi Alice,

Welcome to the group and contratulations on your 3 years. You have achieved an amazing recovery in that time and must have worked really hard to get there, well done.

Its not easy to let go when we feel we have been wronged or let down by the medical profession. I am sure there are many of us on this forum who have experienced less than excellent care, but its good that you are working towards acceptance about what happened. I am also on that journey, its not easy but finding acceptance is about finding peace within ourselves, which also allows us to heal both emotionally and physically. Holding on to anger or resentment towards what we experienced can only hurt us, so choosing to accept and let it go is both brave and putting you and your health first.

I hope you will find many new friends here on the forum, I am fairly new to it myself, they are a great bunch and full of wisdom and encouragement.

Wishing you well and Happy Stroke Recovery Day.

Hi Lizzie22,

Thank you for your kind message.
Yes it hasn’t been easy dealing with this medical misadventure that I went through in hospital, especially as i led a life being fit, healthy and active
prior to having the accident that caused me to suffer a massive stroke.

I’ve really had to work so hard accepting what happened & come to peace with it.
I am sorry to hear that you are also on a similar path as I am.
I really feel that it makes us better and stronger people.
It is so nice to have joined a like minded community that can all understand and empathise with each other and share online advice if needed.

I’m looking forward to to speaking with others on here

Hi Bobbi,
Thanks for your reply,
Everyone has been so kind in writing to me & even though I am on the other side of world, I feel so welcomed and supported in on this site.
I am also an early riser, since having my stroke I now wake early and go to bed early at night.
I find the early mornings are when I feel the best mentally in the peace and stillness.

I am going back to hospital this week for an annual MRI brain scan.
They are never fun but so important to have done.

I really like your saying “Keep on Keeping on”

Take care

Hello @Mich-mm ,

Thank you for welcoming me on here.

I am so sorry to hear that you are still unable to walk after having your haemorragic stroke. I am very fortunate in that my existing aneurysm that was discovered in 2018 and has been coiled still remains unruptured.

My stroke unfortunately occurred at hospital after having repeat coiling surgery and a stent put in my brain, when I was supposed to be kept monitored in the high dependency unit for 72 hours recovering but I was moved far too soon to a neurosurgery ward, and there I suffered a massive blod clot to my brain and then the CVA leaving my left side paralysed.

I now have to have yearly scans and a MRI on my brain to monitor it, and actually went to hospital yesterday to have one done so fingers crossed for a positive result. I try to keep as healthy as I can and practice daily gratitude knowing that I could have been a lot worse off.

It sure is an ongoing journey.

Sending yous strength also

Take care,

Alice :sunflower:
