Hello, I am thinking of buying a wheelchair accessible car so that I can take my husband out. He is in a tall wheelchair and what I am finding is that headroom in some vehicles is limited to 140 cm. Does anyone have any experience of which makes a vehicle would work with a tall wheelchair please?
Sorry, no experience of WAVs. I transfer out of my wheelchair and use a hoist to store it in the boot. You’ll be able to see most of the available vehicles if you can get to a Motability event:
Thank you, but the problem is getting my husband to try the various vehicles with the headroom. Also, we are in Sussex and the mobility shows are in Birmingham and Edinburgh, but thanks for the suggestion anyway.
Hi & welcome to the community. I can’t help with your specific query but as Janet has mentioned motability maybe you could give them a call as you can’t get to their showroooms. They will have experience of this. One of the guys I work with has to use a van to ferry his dad, who has had multiple strokes, around.You might need to look at something like that.
If you look at the Motability site you can search for available WAV’s. This list may not be comprehensive but it is long. You can then look up the internal and external dimensions of each vehicle to judge suitability. A lot of dealers will bring vehicles to you for a demonstration if you can’t get to them.
Thank you; will take a look. Don’t think we qualify for motability and most of the cheaper vehicles are in the north of England unfortunately. I just wondered if anyone in this forum had a ‘tall’ wheelchair and could recommend a particular make if car which works for the height
