Anyone else struggling with the heat?

This weather is really doing a number on me!

I struggled with the heat before my stroke, as I already had and existing spinal cord defect that messes with the body’s ability to regulate temperature, but this is something else! Any tips for managing with the heat gratefully received.

Hi there I’m currently in Spain thinking it would do me good . Wow the heat has not been my friend . Fatigue is far worse here than home and struggling big time . Apart from plenty of water and trying to cool down when you can I don’t really have any other tips for you . I had not even given the heat a thought before coming out here as I was starting to manage fatigue at home but you are not alone in being affected by it . Good luck and hopefully normal uk weather will return shortly

Temperature control does seem to be an issue for some after a stroke. The only advice I rely have is stay out of the sun if you can, drink plenty of water. Cover up with light loose clothing if you have to go out. Maybe put some cold water in a hottie.

I have found, and I believe there are schools of thought on this, that having a hot drink on a hot day helps to cool you down.

So I drink tea instead of iced drinks.

I also drink more water to stay hydrated - you don’t want to get de-hydrated

Open windows and get air flowing through the room.

My nan told me this many years ago when I was a child drinking too much fizzy cold drinks oe squish or fruit juice. I believe the thermostat in our bodies heat up cold drinks causing us to swear
T more ? And drinking hot drinks our bodies need to cool it down? Im no scientist but going from my nagging nan lol
I googled and this is a bit of what I found
In essence, the key is the evaporation of sweatstrong text. If the sweat can evaporate, a hot drink can indeed help you cool down, even in warm weather. strong text
Thanks for the reminder, does that mean I need to swap my ice lollies for a cuppa tea

Tea - not only does it help cool you, but it also has health benefits.
Green tea in particular is good for you for various reasons including inducing calming brain waves, improves heart health and could even help delay dementia.
You might need to drink at least 3 cups a day do benefit from the health benefits.

Brew a cuppa, out your feet up and listen to this podcast.

As an aside, I am not sure but is it the case @HHilary is moonlighting?

Keep doors, windows, curtains closed to keep the heat of the day out.
Open them in the cool after dark for a good night’s sleep.

@Gaina Like @Bobbi said curtains closed over windows open I feel really helps I don’t always fully close them as I need some sunlight but have them near to the middle. keeping hydrated water of course but my favourite is green tea! or the herbal fruit ones can be used hot or cold. Try experimenting. But its the weekend so tonight I am having a cheeky wee chardonnay!

I do like making cold brew in my cafetiere, the coffee tastes completely different. Just make it as usual, but with cold water rather than hot and let it sit in the fridge overnight give it a stir (but don’t push the plunger down). I like sugar in my coffee, so buy sugar syrup otherwise you’ll be stirring it for ages if you use granulated! :joy:

So basically do what I’m doing to help my dog out - stay indoors and keep a fan on (he draws the line at sharing his bone broth ice cubes with me ).

October onwards is the best time to go if you don’t do well in the heat. We used to go to Benalmadena in October and for Christmas.

I never thought of that. Will have to give it a try.

Hi Gaina-- I have read that the back of the neck contains nerves that help regulate body temperature. So, when convenient hold a cold cloth or icepack to the back of your neck. I bought (on Amazon) a little hand-held roller(about 2o3 inches) that contains a liquid. It’s a miniature ice/roller. I keep it in the freezer and give the back of my neck a nice cool roll/massage when it’s hot. :slightly_smiling_face:

Keep curtains closed, certainly on the side the sun is coming in.
If the temp is cooler outdoors then windows and doors open.
If the temp is hotter outdoors than inside, then keep your doors/windows closed. You don’t want any more heat coming inside.
If you have a loft then keep the loft hatch open because heat rises, so why not let it rise into the loft out of the way  And it does work, we do this every year and it can end up cooler upstairs than down stairs at times.
We keep some hand towels/tea towels and water bottles in the freezer. Very handy for wrapping towels around your neck to cool down.
The frozen water bottles are handy for rolling about under your feet and cooling them off when you’re sitting down . . . but put a towel under the bottle to stop the floor getting wet.
I’ve read suggestions to put your pillow in the fridge so its cooler at bedtime. But I thought, where would I put all my food in the mean time  And beside, the coolness wouldn’t last very long anyway, so I’ve never actually tried :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
