My physio and nurses are due to stop coming as it will be 6 months from the date I left rehab.
I am getting passed to the community team.
What worries me is that I won’t be able to get further than I am now.
My balance is good and I walk with a small legged quad stick.
I can’t move my fingers myself or my toes.
Any advice?
Hopefully the physio & nurses etc will have given you some exercises & things to do. Keep doing these & things will continue to improve. Also ask them what else you can do when you have mastered those ones.
You’ll also.find a wealth of info / exercises on the Internet & YouTube. Just search for exercises after stroke or exercises for week arm / leg etc.
Stroke association also offer some exercise classes online. You can sign up for those here:
Online Stroke Activities Hub | Stroke Association
Most of our recovery is in our own hands & often we can progress further once thw physios leave you to it.
Try not to worry you can do it.
Best wishes
Ann
That’s an amazing answer!
Thanks for the advice.
I am being passed to community team.
I am doing my exercises and I also follow a therapist on you tube.
My balance is good.
I’m trying to walk in the kitchen without holding on to anything and can do a few steps steadily.
If I could get my hand working with me controlling my fingers I would be happy.
I go for my second dose of botox on Monday.
It helps alot with the tightening so that when my physio is doing the bending and stretching of my arm and wrist it doesn’t hurt as much.
Thank you @SimonStead Welcome to the community. Hope you are doing well.
Sounds like you are doing lots already. If you continue with all that you should continue on the upward trend. Hands often take longer to come back - they’re quite tricky. We often feel a little scared when the medical professionals let us loose. You’ll soon find your own routine. You can build rehab into every day activities rather than making it a specific thing all the time.
Wishing you the best of luck.
Ann
Thanks.
Steps are going to be a challenge .
The therapist online said that hands take longer because they are further away.
I had 3 strokes 1 after the other.
2 mini and then the full 1.
September 14th.
Only thing I got was weakness
And this is the most amazing first post I have read on this forum (and I have read a few) !
Welcome to the community @SimonStead
That’s all I have to say!!

I know exactly what you mean,I am a year into my stroke. I had a really brilliant team of physio at the local hospital gym. and was doing really good.
unfortunately there isn’t enough money for
long term treatment. and it stopped i also had the home visits for a short while .and likewise you get a certain number of visits and then that stops.
it can feel like you have been dumped,
but it’s just the way it is. I’m afraid. there are some really brilliant physio therapy videos on YouTube, just a matter of judging if they are right for your needs.i also set up some
resistance bands in my bedroom and hand rail around the patio area.i am still in a hospital bed at home which is also good for
exercises,as it moves up and down. I really all depends on your circumstances and available room. or if you could afford a private physiotherapist for a while to set up a routine at home that may help.
just have a search in your area for any community gyms etc I’m sure your local council etc could advise. what facilities are around.good luck just keep working on your recovery, any way you can.it all helps
you are doing really well if you don’t need to hold on while walking.im a year in and am nowhere near that stage.
I have found a occupational therapist on you tube who is easy to follow and when I showed my physio some of the exercises she does he said they will help.
Search post stroke.
That’s the name her videos are on.
She has black hair and is from America.
Am sure you will find something on there to help you progress.
To help your balance I will tell you what my physio got me to do.
Stand for 10 minutes holding on to back of a chair or something.
Then after a while try not doing.
Confidence will build slowly.
The more you stand the quicker your balance will come.
Also when your standing put most of your weight on bad leg.
That builds strength in it.
At the moment I use a foot splint to stop my foot turning sideways
I am going for my second dose of botox injections on Monday they really help.
When my physio does the bending and stretching it doesn’t hurt as much after the botox.
Stand ups help as well stand up from a chair then sit down × 10
Hope this helps
And I’ve just posted a link to her channel of your other post
I have been with the community team for over a year. Neither they or the hospital team can fix you. They can show you what to do but it is down to you to actually have the determination to do the exercises they give you. I am still struggling to use my left arm and my walking is pretty ordinary. I still do my exercises every day and am seeing some improvements. My advice is to stick at it.
