Almost 2 years on - seem to be going backwards last 3 months

had a bleed stroke almost 2 years ago and was 6 weeks in hospital but since then all has moved forward - Movement good and of normal speed- I run the house and do all the things that i did before - things have been improving slowly and regularly - all seems well – about 3 months ago my leg developed shooting pains up into my hip which stayed with me but is a little better now- worse is that i have a heavy feeling in my right foot that makes my balance feel a bit off off and i need to use a stick outside or use my husband’s arm to grab hold on to when walking - I have moved to walking normally to quite slowly at times and much more slowly

seen the doctor and have had x rays – awaiting results -also physio but no improvement so far [4 weeks] - seeing the doc tomorrow but i find it very hard to explain how this feels to him - i can’t really describe how it feels to myself -really was not expecting this regression -expected to continue to make progress as before and am finding these backward steps hard to deal with - anyone that has experienced this - be glad to hear from you - i’m a glass 1/2 full kind of person -but finding it pretty depressing right now

Same here. 3 1/2 years in but I hurt my right foot last December, and after a couple of weeks the whole leg felt strange, as though there is a tight bandage on it. There was spasticity a well at bedtime, which a magnesium supplement helped with, but for the last month the knee hasd felt as if it will give way if I bed too far. I am walking about the flat but using an electris wheelchair to go out in case of collapse. Physio says I need to keep doing exercise building the muscle but it feels to me that I’ve actually overloaded it. Seeing a senior physio next week as he is referring to specialists: the GP just says it’s because of the stroke but it was too sudden a change IMHO

My right arm has also gone back to an earlier stage of dtiffness, with muscle spasms on waking.

I hope you get some answers soon and good that are you getting checked over.

There is a thing called stroke decompensation which can bring your symptoms back if you have over done it. Is it possible that you have overdone it? It may have caught up with you over time.

You can find out a bit more here. Here

saw my doc today - all tests are ok – he recommends sticking with the physio who thinks it may be a trapped nerve and has given me some exercises – will see how things progress

Same here. I’m 11 years post stroke and have been getting leg pain when I get out of bed. The physio has been giving me glute exercises, but then I twisted a ligament in my other knee and this triggered my spasticity. My GP changed my medication dosage yesterday, but won’t send me for any scans until they’ve tried everything else. I nearly went flying on the treadmill this morning, because my ankle/knee/hip flexors were so stiff I was tripping over my foot. Autumn is always a problem for me anyway because of the change in the weather.

Interesting about decompensation. One of the physios is telling me that I need to build back the leg muscles aftre resting for a fortnight, but my instinct is that the knee joint in particular is telling me to back off for a bit. I have now seen a different phsio who is referring me to neurology. Who knows how long that will take!

Current technique is to change chairs frequently, take short walks within the building and use the electric wheelchair to get to the dining room and outside for fresh air twice a day.

Hope you don’t have to wait too long for your appointment.

You are right to listen to your body. If it is telling you to rest it a bit then do. Build back up yiur exercise gradually- you’ll know when you need to stop.
