Hello, i am a carer for my husband. He has recently started to find sleeping very painful and feels the matress is too hard. Besides following up on pain medication ireally want toget him a new mattress, however i am really confused as to the best one to buy. He wants a nice soft one but i am concerned if to soft he will not be able to move position easily. Can anyone offer less confusing advice than i am getting from internet searches. Thank you
I think your only option for something like this is to go to several bed stores and test. It may take a while so maybe spread the search out over a few days.
I destroyed my back/neck long before I had a stroke so personally canât have a firm mattress. Learned the importance of good quality pillows too.
I bought an âEmmaâ mattress, they do (I think) up to a full year refund policy if you donât like it, or they did anyway. I recommend them but you canât test before buying, so proceed with caution on that.
PillowsâŚ. Iâve spent a vast sum of money on these to find what I like most. I got all of mine from TK Maxx, they have a large variety of firmness, material etc etc.
Dreams do a 90 day return policy if you decide you donât like the bed.
Hi, I would suggest visiting one of the big name stores and testing out some different mattresses. Dreams do a âSleep Matchâ to find your perfect matress in minutes. I never tried this personally but it sounds like a good idea. As others have said pillows are also an important thing to investigate.
Something else we considered following my stroke was an adjustable bed, as I find it uncomfortable sleeping too flat and sleep slightly propped up. We didnât buy an adjustable bed as we needed an ottoman bed for extra storage.
Good luck with your search.
Regards Sue
Weâve used 100% natural latex pillows for the last 20+ years. They are SO comfortable. They last for many years and donât lose their plumpness or shape. Our first ones came âfreeâ with a Dunlopillo latex mattress which was the most comfortable mattress weâd ever slept on. Canât afford to get another one without going into debt unfortunately. But I found an almost equally as comfortable mattress from an online store - Inofia. Very reasonable prices, 10yr warranty. I love getting into bed. Itâs my happy placeđ
Hello @CarolSoep - welcome to the community and wishing you and your husband all the best.
I see you have already had some responses to your request for some advice on best mattress for pain. Hopefully you have found it useful.
If I may, I would like to add something which may or may not be worth considering/asking?
Has your husband been assessed by a healthcarfe professional? You say you are a carer, but it is not clear what your husband is suffering from and what care he needs.
I wonder if he should be assessed by, for example and Occupational Therapist (OT) or a District Nurse (DN) to see if he might benefit from having a âMedical bedâ.
My mother was given a medical bed after her care needs were assessed. The bed has adjustable settings including the pressure in the mattress (like an air bed) that can be set to low-medium-high. In addition this can be set to continuous, or dynamic etc so that it can be adjusted to the individualâs comfort needs.
Just somethink that might be worth looking into.
Hoping this has not added to the confusion.
A memory foam mattress topper would be the best way to go in my opinion, and you can test this out in any bed store.
I have one on my bed. Iâve got all the softness we like, plus the firmness of the mattress underneath for stability when turning over/getting out of bed. Its about 2 inches thick, might have flattened out a bit over the years.
I donât suffer stroke pain, but I have had a hip replacement in the past and was thankful for having that topper. It did make for a comfortable nightâs sleep and did make it any âmoreâ difficult getting out of bed with a recovering hip

Hi @CarolSoep just popping by to say hi & welcome to the community.
Youâve already got lots of options to consider above. I use memory foam topper for mattress & memory foam pillows too. I have spent a small fortune on pillows over the years & found memory foam to suit me best.
Popping into a shop to try the different mattresses woukd be the best way but not sure if that is possible for you both.
Personally I would advise agsinst anything too soft as that can cause other aches & pains. Weâre all different though.
Thank you all for your advice and ideas. I should have mentioned husband has suffered a major stroke and two minor ones, is also diabetic. Pain is constant all down weak right side and feet also.
We did try Dreams but they were not very welcoming and just pointed out 3 foam mattresses, maybe the wheelchair put then off and they were concerned about him lying on the beds, i donât know. We are not eligable for a nhs bed as husband still able to move round slowly in the house using a zimmer frame. However after much research and many rabbit holes (we needed delivery to room and old mattress disposal) we have a Rem-fit 400 under 100 day trial and it seems to be helping, along with new foam pillows. Thank you all again.
Glad you have found something that seems to be helping. Mattresses and pillows are a very personal thing. I lost count of how many pillows I tried before I found one to suit me.
