you should ring ACAS. They’ll advise you what your employer can and cannot do. Employers are not above the law and must abide by the rules.

There’s many posts here about people’s experiences; some good & some bad - searching ACAS will find most of them

Has work got an occupation health dept/person?

Generally small private sector have different ability to large and public sector.

Pam is right about acas (Which is why you’ll find them mentioned in most of the previous posts on the subject¡) - if you search here you’ll find posts with links to their web, helpline and other sources of guidance

Are you a member of a union? They will give advice and will accompany you to any meetings with your managers. If you think you may be laid off then investigate claining ESA. If you have a mortgage you may have critical illness cover.

Hi @Citizen8

As others have mentioned ACAS would be good for you to call. You could also call our Stroke Helpline: 0303 3033 100 they will be able to sign post you to different organisations that may be able to help you.

Citizens Advice to help with what benefits you may be entitled to.

ACAS for employment rights advice.

Get a copy of your employers absence policy & ensure they follow it.

Occupational health through employer for adjustments advice.

My advice is do not leave of own accord. If you are not able to return (& you still may be able to yet) then let them medically retire or ill health dismiss you.

Good luck.

Hello All, I really dont understand all this thats going on with the stroke, but had manager meeting and left feeling as that It was not an issue to the company, he then started talking that a payoff was availbel that will be about 1 years pay??? I handnt asked for this but being realistic I knew before stroke I was struggling with all the heavy work and the horrible place and people who would avoid the work and got others to sort things out for me to do extra for them,… I’m 57 and was looking for something lighter but nothing was available…so! I will see what the letter have to say when they turn up and if Occupational decide to see how things are as its been since April 21st and nothing from them… its not that Ive never worked and boy have I had some rubbish jobs in my life over the last 41 years… I contacted pip (as told to) and i think there’s another interview next week., watch this space, laters for laters “H” Out!

Hello Janet, its a partnership so no Unions allowed, its a awful place and the manager is vague, I fell the need to load up with ammunition (Legal and the like) before it kicks off, Never been in this situation, Ive been forewarned that the manager has taken on x 2 full timers and a temp so my roles already covered… all the best “H” Out!

I wonder if they were talking about an ill health payment or some sort of redundancy payment? You need to find out exactly what they are offering & then look into your entitlements from there. You want to make sure they’re not offering you less than you are entitled to. Then it is your decision I guess. If your health will prevent you returning to the role is it better to take the offer? Only you can decide that but make sure you have taken advice & have all the facts you need before you agree to anything.

Is that legal? I would always have someone with me if attending a meeting with management

long story short i had 3 breakdowns in 6 years
i got out on ill health retirement age 46 got 25 k payout and kept all my shares (when they were worth something) -nev er struggled with mental health till this last year since my stroke but im coping

i worked as a Courier for 8 years , tell them you were qaa postie for 21 years there falling over themselves to hire you , i did one gig for about 7 years working for a main employer , who in turn subbied out to about 5 or 6 diffrent companies depending on depot i moved between companies about 3 or 4 times ,if it didnt work with one just move to another, always self employed ,surprisingly if you made it past the 2 year mark you were considered a lifer and if you could maintain metrics there was always a job for you ,no holiday pay no sick pay , no work = no pay , i enjoyed it
