Transfer Mum nearer to her children

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice and to see if anyone here has faced the same challenge: my mum had a severe stroke three months ago and is still in stroke rehab in a hospital in one health board in Scotland. We, her three children, have requested a transfer to a hospital nearer us (in a different health board) so that we can support her daily in her rehab. This requested has been refused (so far) on the grounds that it is not her postcode area. Clearly this refusal is not in the patient’s best interests, or, I would argue, the NHS’s. Has anyone else come across this reason for refusal and managed to overcome it? I’d be so grateful for advice. We can’t find anything written down about this reason.

@HelenaPo Hi & welcome to the community.

I haven’t encountered this personally however someone I work with whose mum had dementia did eventually get transferred out of area to be nearer her daughter. It took a bit of a battle & they are funding themselves so that may have made a difference. I think funding is usually a reason they turn down these requests as it is a l9cal council area that would normally provide the funding (I think). If you can appeal you should. My example is in England so don’t know if that makes any difference.

Hope you manage to get it sorted.

Best wishes

Ann

Thank you very much, that is helpful to know. I think we also have a bit of a battle ahead of us, hopefully with a positive outcome that I’ll be able to share with you.

Hi @HelenaPo
Hello & Welcome

Some things will be out with most folk here’s direct experience cos we are under the Scottish NHS

1st rather than the Stroke Association our support (in theory?) comes from Chest Heart and Stoke Scotland

They run support groups who are a great source of peer knowledge how-to advice & street- smart navigation of local services.

See

There’s a map on the webpage that shows where they are

CHSS should provide you with a Stroke Liaison Nurse. I found my 1st a bit mediocre but the second was really helpful
Ask their support line if they haven’t reach out

adviceline@chss.org.uk
0808 801 0899

There’s loads of stuff on the web site https://www.chss.org.uk

Maybe the refusals from NHS would be helped by reaching out to PASS[1] who are our equivelents to the English pals

https://careinfoscotland.scot/topics/your-rights/patient-advice-and-support-service/#:~:text=PASS%20is%20an%20independent%20service,other%20matters%20affecting%20their%20health.

It’s run by Citizens Advice Bureau

Where are you & mum?

You might find 40 things gives you & siblings useful perspectives.

Hi Simon,

Thank you very much for all that very useful info. I rang CHSS and they actually signposted me here! But I will try to join one of their support groups. I didn’t know about stroke liaison nurses so that’s very helpful. Mum is in Glasgow currently and we are trying to get her moved to Dundee. Hopefully I’ll have a success story to share with the forum soon.

Hi
CHSS have either just launched or are about to launch their community support initiative plus I’ve been talking to the NHS and them and others about creating digital peer support.

It’s not clear from your message what they directed you here for - But I guess if it was the sort of advice that we’ve given you as to how you can get hold of agencies that was useful and has closed circle

I don’t have any first-hand contacts but I might have second hand contacts - But this isn’t where my networking links mostly lie - but if you continue to struggle to get hold of the right people I can ask around
