Stroke Zine Book review Conclave - Robert Harris

I read Conclave a few years ago when it was first published, I am a Robert Harris fan. I enjoyed the book in it’s own way, mainly because I am fascinated by this secret ceremony. I wondered what all the fuss was about when it was released as a film, so re read it. I won’t reveal too much obviously, but it did lay bare the machinations that do go on. All of human frailties is in there; naked ambition coupled with the dread of what the role entails. Isolation, commitment and dealing with all the secrets of the fellow cardinals. A leading contender is discarded because a nun confronts him with their illegitimate child. Another is revealed with financial irregularities and fraud of church funds. When the Pope is eventually re-elected, his own explosive secret comes to light. I’m not sure that the book reveals *all the secrets of the conclave but gives an overview of what probably does happen. Harris does write that he did have ‘insider’ knowledge and assistance! I enjoyed the book both times I read it and do not intend to see the film. Perhaps someone else has? Best wishes. Norma

I haven’t read the book or seen the film. I might have to give the book a go. I’m not really a film watcher.
