Statins

Hi all,
Has Anyone had an adverse affect taking Statins? I’ve been on 80mg for 17 months now.
Although I have no physical problems although my balance hasn’t improved, I’m concerned about what’s happening inside.
Had blood test back in April and heard no feedback from doctors.
Take care.

Hi Seeney,
I have been on 80 mg. Statins for 6 months. Recently had a blood test which showed slightly raised liver blood. Doctors advised to stop taking it for 2 weeks and then I have to have another blood test. If you are concerned I would suggest you ring the doctors and ask about your blood test result.
Regards, Foz.

Hi
If you search the forum for posts about statins you’ll be swamped by the number

80 mg is quite high and I was on the same for 6 months and then because of the aches pains cramps and other shit reduced it to 40 which I’m still on.

There’s an awful lot of press to say lipids are vital to are well-being and function of our bodies and minds so suppressing them is a bad thing.
Also that they keep the drugs companies afloat financially which is why there’s an epidemic in prescribing them for every demographic in every country!

Some informed arguments are at

In the case of ischaemic stroke sufferers statins have a secondary beneficial impact that I can’t remember the description of but was the reason when I last discussed it with the GP that I stuck to them.

They are far from the only way of managing cholesterol and they’re far from the only drug if you take a medication route to managing your cholesterol rather than a dietary one

Statins can cause affects but doesn’t for everyone. I am on 80 mgs too & have been for about 2 1/2 years. If you have any concerns you should speak to your GP. There are alternatives if you need them.

80mg does seem high, had to go to double check my own to see I was the same. But I’m on 20mg Atorvastin and have been for the past 15yrs, my husband started on them a couple months ago at 20mg too. GP has been unduly concerned with annual blood test results, so fingers crossed it remains that way for many more years :crossed_fingers:

Would have thought they’d start with a low dose unless there was exceptional circumstances for a high dose start.

I was on Atorvastatin for years with no adverse effect. 40 mg.
I was taken off them after my stroke and a recent blood test has shown that my cholesterol has risen and so I have been told to go back on to Atorvastatin.

I’ve tried all the common statins - they made me feel nauseous, increased headaches and made me feel pretty rubbish all the time. After two years I had had enough but my GP has now put me on Ezetimibe - a statin type drug that works in a different way to the others. The good news - no side effects! It was a long road to get here but I’m happy with this new one. Perhaps worth exploring for those that do have bad side effects to statins .

I saw the effects within 48 hours. Ezetimibe is for those that can’t tolerate statins. They don’t put you on it unless you’ve tried the more common ones I believe. Good luck!
