I am so sorry to hear that and I totally sympathise. With your luck, your dinghy would be stopped, and they would take you back to Calais 
I guess it’s down to your family to support you now - that is what the state believes. I know what you mean about the “tiny” savings - I dipped into my rainy day funds so often whenever I was looking for a job because they would only pay me for the contributions based. I never got no help with mortgage payments, though I think I might been stupid on that front as I am sure I had PPI but didn’t claim it - but then no one advised me
