Thats fascinating info that the pie crust was not meant to be eaten! It explains quite a lot of things especially that hygiene was pretty skimpy and even washing ones hands before a meal was not considered essential.

I believe, though I could be proven wrong, that this ignorance of hygiene but knowledge of disease was what why beer and wine, mead and such like fermented beverages containing some alcohol were considered the safest liquids to drink.
The tradition of a pie and a pint goes way back in history probably for good reason.

It was not meant to be eaten, but you can guarantee it went to the servants, beggars and the dogs.
