@rups - I haven’t seen the documentary, but I’ll watch it later.
Val - I wasn’t aware of the low wages but this sadly is nothing new.
I think the larger supermarkets and companies that contract and then squeeze suppliers on price are the real culprits.
They did this with farmers asking them to grow fruit and veg, supply milk etc. and then the procurement teams would threaten to “pull out” at the last minute forcing the farmers/suppliers to accept the ridiculous / unsustainable price or lose all together. These practices are just the tip of the ice berg and I have to say I feel for companies live Evri who I guess are ultimately trying to make a living.
The Supply Chain is viscous and it starts at the top.
Take luxury goods - made for next to nothing using child labour in developing countries and sold for huge amounts here.
Groceries etc - already covered above
Services e.g. delivery drivers at the bottom of the supply chain and hence what’s left for them?
We as consumers are also to blame as we are forever looking to pay less and less.
When I think about the cost of goods day compared to earnings, and maybe I am wrong about this, but we have to take some of the responsibility.
But hey, ho, that’s the ways of the world.
We makes our bed and lies in it ![]()
