Migraine medication

I am hoping someone might have a definitive answer or experienced similar.

I have suffered from migraines since being young (would say pre teen). They were always without aura and usually lasted 1-3 days. Symptoms were always a thumping headache usually on one side, nausea, light sensitivity. I had a migraine with aura about 5 days before my stroke and took the only medication that has ever worked -Sumatriptan.

When discussing this with the hospital pharmacist when I was due to get discharged he could not give me a definitive answer whether or not I could take this if I got them after my stroke (SAH) 8 weeks ago.

I had my first migraine 2 weeks ago which I just had to ride out with paracetamol and sleeping in a dark room all day as I had researched this myself and most info says not to take sumatriptan following a stroke.

However since this my own GP and the ward I was on have said it should be fine to take. I woke up with an awful migraine this morning so have chanced taking one and am now just keeping all crossed I am okay but equally worried I have done the wrong thing.

@MrsG16 I have suffered migraines in the past and they are dreadful, I had them with aura. You have to be careful at mixing meds. I would research the F&*$k out of it and make my own decision, cause if its the wrong one at least I made it. The GP you are just a guinea pig. Its not his life on the line, its yours. Sorry i am direct its my Glasgow upbringing. I am not meaning to offend. But this is your life Merry Christmas when it comes :evergreen_tree:

Thank you for your reply.

I am from Sunderland so live around plenty bluntness don’t worry haha

I am suprisingly not on any medication as a consequence of stroke as had an subarachnoid haemorrhage and they never found a cause so they do not know what to treat. I think it was a spike of high blood pressure at the time due to stress but my bp remained really low throughout my hospital stay so I left with no meds just paracetamol

After my husband spoke to the ward I was on they said it was okay to take the Sumitriptan but hadn’t even asked my name or anything. I was feeling so ill I just took it. Migraine has gone for a few hours and managed some sleep though I can feel it lingering but nothing dreadful happened.

Can not help but feel like a guinea pig through this whole process.

Happy Christmas to you too

I used to have mild migraines for years , never developed into much if I took Migraleve medication quickly, I had a stroke in my sleep in September 24, and haven’t had a migraine since!
