Medication prescribed

Hi I’m a little confused regarding my prescriptions, I have been having terrible itching since starting Clopidogrel and rovouststin and one GP prescribed fexofenadine 120mg which did help. When I requested a repeat prescription the message came back to buy them OTC. Shouldn’t the Dr want to keep a record of what you are taking to help with essential medicines?

Fexofenadine is an over the counter med, however, Clopidogrel and Rosuvastatin are on repeat. It sounds like you may have an allergic reaction to Clopidogrel, your GP may see about switching you to ticagrelor which is another anti-platelet med, I guess it depends if your reaction settles or if it persists.

@Nanag push for these to be prescribed. As you are stroke survivor and should not be buying over the counter. My GP refused to prescribe Paracetamol as per the hospitals recommendation on my discharge. I know its paracetamol, but the amount of people who rip off the NHS for prescriptions is unbelievable. This is why us as stroke survivors are paying the price. All Stroke survivors should receive their meds. Apologies but i feel so strongly about this. Good luck :four_leaf_clover: They cost cut to the wrong people. So we are paying for all the people who rip the systems to shreds.

I can sympathise. I’m having a bit of a nightmare with my medication at the moment.

I’ve been on the same medication since my stroke 8 years ago and then in January I was prescribed Atorvastatin 20mg, then in April/May I developed a very itchy angry red rash.

Asked my GP if it could be the Atorvastatin but she said no but thought it was an allergic reaction to something and referred me to a dermatologist. To help with the itching she prescribed Fexofenadine 120mg. Sadly this has not helped at all and the itching is driving me insane. No one can tell me how long I will have to wait for an appointment with the dermatologist, so I am seeing a private dermatologist this afternoon. In the meantime we have changed our washing pods etc to see if this helps but so far no relief.

Just wondering whether anyone else has had trouble after taking Atorvastatin??

Regards Sue

If it is the only thing that has changed, there could be a connection.

Atorvastatin can cause skin rashes as a side effect, which may include hives or itchy red spots. If you experience a rash while taking atorvastatin, it’s important to contact your doctor for advice. That’s what the google search assistant says.

Just had my appointment with the private dermatologist who says that it’s eczema. She has given me a different steroid cream and says I should see a difference in a couple of weeks :crossed_fingers:.

Just after stroke I had Pityriasis rosea, it was at the time I was on atorvastatin, whether linked or not, I cannot say. I used bucket loads of soothing cream to calm it down. It made for a very unpleasant four to six weeks before it cleared. It starts with a small Christmas tree shaped rash, appropriate for mentioning this time of year. It is possible that atorvastatin can trigger a form of Pityriasis rosea, I switched from atorvastatin to rosuvastatin in the end because it has less pervasive side-effects.
