Indigestion and reflux

Have noticed this last couple of weeks my indigestion and reflux have been bad. Yes I know they can be noted as the same thing but there is a difference in how the affect you. My eating has not changed and my stress levels are ok.

Just wounded if since your stroke do you have times when this flares up. My pharmacy thinks it could be the medication. So I’ve got drs appointment this morning to see what they say. If that’s the case then I will have to live with it.

Good luck Gnasher - there’s medication which can help - im on lansoprazole which has a checkered history I think (I’ll say no more - see what the Dr gives you!). Seems to work well 4 me so far……
I think it was prescribed for me as a stomach protection for Clopidogrel and the statin🤷‍♂️…..

He thinks it’s the blood pressure one that could be giving me the issue. But unable to take me off it so soon on putting me on it. I would need to be off it a week or two. And it would be to risky just now. Asked how uncomfortable it was and it’s more a nuisance than anything else. So he’s said take the Lansoprazolae tablet later than you are.

Got to go for bloods tests tomorrow just to see if anything else shows up. Monitor it for a couple of weeks and then go back if it’s still the same. Gave me a good examination prodding here and prodding there so let’s see.

Thats interesting Gnasher. My wife was on Lansoprazole in its early days and it irritated her stomach (ironic) reflux etc. Long story short as I understand it it’s unwise to take on an empty stomach.
Obviously I am not a medic and I am sure yr Dr has given you the wisest direction.
Say how it goes please? As a fellow taker it’s all very much of interest.
Cheers Mate👍

I take Lansoprazole but I still get a flare up of indigestion/reflux occasionally. I usually just ride it out and often it is gone the next day.

I am suffering with the same symptoms, just back from a break in a lovely hotel break in Spain, with the best hotel food we havre experienced (last year first visit), this time my diet consisted of Porridge for breakfast and soup for dinner, I actually lost weight, anything solid, bread, cakes vegetables etc, in uncomfortable restrictions in my upper throat then often hiccups as well, very uncomfortable, these symptoms began about 3 weeks ago coincidentally when a bad cold started, I have had mild Acid Reflux for years, but very mild compared to now.

Stroke related?, my stroke was 6th September 2024, in my sleepI will try for a doctors appointment asap.

Hello there. I’m Sue and I had my stroke in July 2024. I was reading through some of the posts and I thought I’d say that I’ve just read your message regarding the reflux etc, but what caught my eye most was the food sticking in your throat and getting hiccups.

I have several autoimmune illnesses and one, Sjogrens Syndrome, causes food to stick in my throat and the middle of my chest when eating, which I’ve lived with for several years now, but since my stroke two things have happened. One I get hiccups every time I eat, and two my nose runs every time I start to eat, so I do understand how frustrating and difficult it is to eat and enjoy food now, especially if dining with family or out in a restaurant with family and friends. I did query these problems with my hospital stroke team, but all they could say was that the brain often behaves in strange ways after a stroke and in time these annoying niggles may disappear or they may just be a long term result from the brain injury. I had a hemmorrhagic stroke, but have recovered fairly well and I am not complaining, but it was heartening to see I wasnt going mad and that other stroke survivors also experience weird after effects!!

I wish you well in your recovery.

Sue

There is always someone else experiencing these things - we just don’t see them!

I am aged 78 and for the past year I have suffered indigestion and reflux particularly if lying down or going to bed within 2 hours of a meal.
I seem to have developed a problem with the valve at the top of my stomach and sometimes have difficulty release gas causing discomfort, burping and on several occasions vomiting.
I have dealt with this in several ways….
Eat early around 6 pm
I eat small portions only for the evening meal and avoid spicy food.
If affected I suck a Gaviscon tablet .This definitely relieves the reflux.

I occasionally have indigestion and reflux and when I was on Clopidogrel it was quite bad. I too was given Lansoprazole, which I couldn’t take as it make me feel really sick, sometimes to the extent that I would vomit. I was taken off Clopidogrel after my last stroke and put onto Ticagrelor and I was also put on Famotidine for my stomach. That was a game changer for me. Now I rarely have problems and if I do, a spoonful of Gaviscon soon sorts it out, but it is rare.

Same problem and a similar solution-I suck a Gaviscon tablet which cures it in minutes
