Hi Anna, I had an optical stroke 3 weeks ago as a direct result of a cardiac ablation; less than a 1% chance of it happening!
As you can imagine it’s been a huge shock , especially as I have had to give up driving. My husband has glaucoma and hasn’t been able to drive for the last 5 years and I do all the driving.
I have lost peripheral vision on the right hand side of both eyes. I have also been affected in the bottom quadrants of both eyes, making letters merge and dance around.
I am working hard on reading with a frame, colouring books, word searches and card games. . It would be very helpful to know about other stroke survivors who have a similar experience.
I have residual eye and spatial conditions post stroke. I think the main goal is to get the eye muscles and brain communicating again in a synchronised way. Things like gaze stabilisation exercises, pencil push ups, clock eye movements, near and far movements, all should, in theory, work to get some of the neural to optic pathways working again. It’s difficult to measure the progress as visual noise is constant around us, but I just hope that no matter how small, that this kind of rehabilitation does make an impact.
Hi @Penny44 & welcome to the community. I too had an occipital lobe stroke although it had different effects to you.
I echo all that Rups has said. I had many eye exercises to do after my stroke- given to me by the ophthalmology department. Hopefully you have been referred to them so they can help with what yoh need to do.
Welcome to the community, I’m sorry to hear about your stroke and the difficulties you’re facing with your eyesight. It sounds like you’re doing all the right things and I’m sure there are lots of others on here who have similar difficulties and will be along to share their stories with you too.

I had a stroke in my eye before my main stroke Perhaps this was five years ago. It’s a lengthy subject, eye health, and one that I intend to cover on my Youtube channel. I remember after my main stroke I did a lot of saccadic eye movement exercises which can be an effective part of stroke rehabilitation. A couple of ophthalmologists looked at my MGD and blepharitis, dystonia etc. without success, but most of my eye therapy came from and reconnect with nature and the power of Sunlight. Best wishes.
