It sounds like you are relatively house bound then.
So the best exercise, and simplest exercise I can wholeheartedly recommend out of the exercises for stroke survivors, is sit to stand! That’s the best one of all to get you walking because its activating all the muscles down the backs of your legs…where you need them most in order to get your legs under you.

You got a chair, you’ve got a zimmer aid to help you, and you’ve got time on your hands to do it. And it’s so easy! Just stand up, sit down, stand up again, you can do it while your watching the telly or listening to music or bird watching. You will have had a lot of muscle wastage since your stroke, and that needs building back up, it’s as much of what is holding you back. And it’s going to take a lot of time to build back up, but you’ve got nothing but time as it happens  I know, I know, I’m being cheeky here but we’ve all been there so we all know how much time we had on our hands
Just start each day with 3 sets of 3 reps sit to stands once or twice a day.
When that gets too easy, do 3 sets of 5-10 reps a day without the zimmer frame.
When that gets too easy, try it with your hands straight out in front of you.
When that gets too easy, try it with one leg straight out with heel resting on the floor.
It’ll take a couple months to strengthen your legs, but as the sets get easier, the easier it will get to walk and go further distances. As you begin to walk more freely, don’t forget to continue with the sit to stands as that will continue making your legs stronger.
By which time you might be able for free standing squats, either with or without some kind of support.
There will come a day when you can stand up from your couch/armchair without a grunt or groan. That’s when you’ll know you’ve succeeded

Thanks for getting back to me. I have been doing the sit to stand although I still need the support when I stand. Have also being doing the holding on to furniture and walking. Very carefully imay add! It’s just the spasms come out of nowhere as do the shakes and I get a bit scared in case I fall but I will keep persevering!
