Hi New to group that I didnt want to join

On Saturday the 17th January I had a pretty significant left side stroke, I was rushed to hospital with blue lights and sirens when I arrived I was injected with the anti clotting injection. I woke the following day with no real movement in my left side and had a feed tube fitted as my throat didn’t work.
Over the following weeks I did start recover and food tube was taken out within weeks and I was put on blended food and water.
During February I remember starting get movement back in my left side started with my little finger and progress from there.
By mid February I was moved to a Neuro rehab ward and put on normal food as my throat had started to work again. The Neuro ward then who then stepped up the occupational therapy and physio.. things have started to return now with a lot more movement in my arm and , although I have an AFO on my left ankle I can now walk with the aid if a walking stick although I’m wouldn’t say my walking is prefect by any stretch , I’m are I’m not really lifting my left foot up enough, becomes more obvious when trying to go up stairs. I’m working on left ankle exercises and there is now some movement in my ankle but i can’t move my left foot toes.
Anyway, I’ve been doing Grasp level 3 with ot and can do most of exercises but have a tremor in my hand which makes it hard to pick up things, but I can now flip coins over and put pegs on a plastic cup.
It does still frustrate the hell out of me that it took seconds to lose all this and months to get it back with no realistic expectations as to when I will be fit enough to go back to work. I’ve still got my job and my boss is keen to get me back to work as soon as but I feel I need to concentrate on my recovery etc…

One of the questions no one has really been able to tell me is what condition to I need to be to regain my driving license. I was advised to surrender it when I was discharged from hospital in late April but ive not real idea of how much movement i would need to be able to do to get it back again. I did pass the dvla eye test so that was a bit relief as they thought I might be blind in the left eye but after reading loads of Jeremy Clarkson books obviously helped my eye sight and i passed so for me a big win there.
Driving for me is big deal I’m a classic car owner and love driving, but obviously I also want to be safe, as I’ve never had a my fault accident and don’t want to ruin that status.

I’ve heard some people have had to sit some sort of test with the dvla, has anyone any experience with this ?
I was driving an all day electric car prior to my stroke and would be looking to get another as an when the time is right.
One of the most frustrating thing that has ever happened to me. The recovery is slow and hard work. Thanks for reading .

Hi @classiccarfan & welcome to the community. If sounds like you are making great progress since your stroke although you still have a way to go.

I suspect noone can answer tge question about the level of cinditikn needed to get your licence back as it is probably slightly different for everyone. You have passed one hurdle with the eyesight test which is fantastic. @Bobbi had to sit a driving assessment & may be able to advise you better than I can. You can also use the search function :magnifying_glass_tilted_left: and search driving assessment as it has been discussed many times on the forum.

Speak with the DVLA medical advisers too. They can help.

Hope you can get back to driving soon.

Thanks for all the replies. and the welcome. It looks like I need to fill out a D1 form and also get something from my occupational therapist that I meet the dvla minimum to drive requirement, which I’m fairly certain I don’t meet at the moment. I’ll have to try and work a bit harder this and see how I am. Having said that I was meant to have a review this month as its 3 months since I had my botox injections into my arm and legs… but based on I have a stiff ankle and can’t move my toes and still can’t clench my fist I’d think I’d imagine I’d need a bit more …
