I had my stroke on my birthday January 15th.I had DVT in my left leg and was sent home from doctors then hospital and told to take some painkillers.On the second day my friend took me to doctors again where they said i was having a stroke.My friend took me to hospital.I was on a trolley all day in corridors until 17.30 until i had a scan.The clots had split to both leg calves and one to the back of the brain.I was in hospital a week

Hello Ian - I know it’s a bit late in the day since you had your stroke way back in January and we are noe in May.
But your comment about your friend taking you to hospital whilst you were having a stroke at the doctors sounds quite ridiculous to me. No doctor in their right mind should be asking you to make your own way to hospital whilst you’re having a stroke.
At the first sign of a stroke, it’s 999 and emergency blue lights to fast track you to A&E where you are seen as a priority. It is well documented the first two hours when you’re having a stroke are critical and getting to A&E in the first two hours can potentially make a huge difference to the effects of stroke have on you and how you recover.
I don’t believe this is right - you have a case for negligence here surely? No stroke patient should be left on a trolley unless they have been seen and it has been determined it is not a stroke and even then …
I am at a loss as to what to say other than this whole thing is an absurdity. I don’t know the exact nature of your stroke and how you have coped since then but from what you have said there are been shortcomings
- At the GP on the first visit and definitely on the second visit
- At the hospital.
Perhaps I don’t have all the information and I am making an error of judgement here, but if this happened to me, I’d be looking for answers as to why. However, you may know better than me.
That said, it’s a welcome to the forum and I hope you get better help and support here than you seem to have had from your local healthcare providers.

Yea I can not believe how I was treated.I have a solicitor on the case for negligence and the bit about my friend driving me to hospital has been mentioned once before.I never thought about doctors not calling me an ambulance.luckily the first time at York hospital when I was turned away I had an uber app on my phone so I could get home

I must add because I’m not sure about other areas.I was discharged home with no support.My mother lives a distance and is 90.My friend over the road did me some shopping and checked on me.I contacted docs and they stated the stroke nurse would contact me but it was exactly 8 weeks before I got a telephone appointment.Is this normal ?? I was still confused,couldn’t see on right side and scared of second stroke.Luckily it was raining a lot but I wasn’t sure whether it was safe to go outside

Hi Jon thanks for your message.I feel I have been lucky but as I am finding you can have good days and bad days.
My interests are Leeds Rhinos rugby season ticket holder.I also keep bees and I have recently started metal detecting which has been good in getting me out in the fresh air but also doing about 6,000 steps.
What about you what are your interests??

Hi @Wardy & welcome to the community. Sorry you’ve had cause to join us but hopefully you’ll find it a useful place to be.
Sounds like your GP was less than great when you saw them & the hospital a little slow. That isn’t unusual these days sadly. I would have expected the hospital to gave given you some meds/treatment to sort the DVT on your first visit.
I had to make my own way to hospital when I had my stroke. It was quicker than waiting for an ambulance anyway. Maybe the dr thought the same for you? Not right I know.
Depending on your stroke affects it isn’t that unusual to be discharged home with no support & having to wait 8 weeks for any sort of follow up. Stroke care does seem to be a bit of a postcode lottery.
Hopefully you are making steady progress.

All I can say is that it doesn’t seem normal to me but then I have no idea what goes on across the country. Regardless of whether it is normal or not, I would suggest it is not acceptable and I hope your solicitor sorts it out for you.

Used to keep bees and plan to again in the near future. Still metal detect, great way to spend an afternoon.
