I’m sorry I have not been about on here lately. Stress about money and no work on the horizon.
I’m approaching 3.5 years post-stroke and a new symptom - Hallucinations! Both auditory and vision. I’ve scanned the internet, including Stroke Association, and I’ve got to go to the clinic now to check me out. Wish me luck.
I am currently waiting for an ophthalmology appointment as I have been seeing images of things that aren’t there and recently failed a visual field test. I don’t think I would call them hallucinations. The optician mentioned a syndrome called Charles Bonnet.
You are doing the right thing getting checked over. Fingera crossed all goes well for you.
I have always thought of hallucinations as being a scary thing. Perhaps not but then again seeing headless girls dancing might be considered scary - although because I know it isn’t real they don’t seem to bother me too much.
This is a good post, although I’ve nothing to offer in the way of help or advice. But its good for the sake of awareness for others who may experience this in the future. I myself have the very beginnings of diabetic retinopathy (nothing to be concerned about yet though), so this is something I possibly have to look forward to…oh the joys of life
But at least knowing about, being aware of such things as Bonnets syndrome will at least help to better cope with such a phenomenon. Without the worry that I’m going doolally
Good luck with your medical checks, I do hope this doesn’t prevent you from driving
@MattJC I have not experienced this therefore unfortunately I have nothing to add, regarding hallucinations Did you give up work over three years ago when you had your stroke? What skills do you have for work? Good luck
I went back to work early 2023 but most of my skills were redundant, especially Facilitator to senior Leaders. I’d made new skills last (Servent Leader, adapted everything including my lack of Voice) but the redundant (real this time) caught all of the senior management in early 2024.
Since then, despite applications and then some, I could wave the banner of “I’m unemployable” if I’m not so passionate about working and creating a lasting impression.
With regard to hallucinations, I experienced several on my second day of recovery in hospital all of which either benign or amusing inasmuch as, whilst they were brief and super realistic such as seeing my cat walking down the hospital ward to greet me, I was 100% aware that they had no substance. Or did they? I’m still thinking about it.
Anyway, they were intermittent and only lasted a couple of days rather to my regret. Good luck with your appointment and I hope you get the outcome you require.
Thanks James. My first week post-stroke I was out of it - only thing I remember is pulled my feeding tube out. That hurts even with the concoction of injections but no hallucinations.
Hi Matt,
These visuals can be unnerving at first. I have had these off and on for years mainly seeing something that appears to be a black and white motion picture with people, objects, etc moving about. It seemed it usually happened when I was tired and laid down for a cat nap in the afternoon. After the right thalamus stroke in March this year I have had more that are very involved. All of my senses are heightened…especially sensitivity to light and sound now. I had an especially long drawn out visual when I was having an MRI with contrast in June. I also will see very involved graphic designs that are not moving and really quite lovely. In the hospital I saw these designs with my eyes closed trying to go to sleep, but also when I opened them I saw them on the walls of the hosp room in the dark. Of course I knew they were not real but I took a photo of the wall with my phone just to be sure. Oh the things we do now with our goofy stroke brains. I have been told these are a form of closed eye visuals CEV. My vision on eye exam is as it has been pre stroke but I do have some issues coordinating together the two eyes now since the stroke so it feels a bit not as sharp as before the stroke. Most of the visuals happen when I am really tired and my brain needs a rest. I do not have these other than seeing them when resting lying down or right before going to sleep.
I hope you find some answers.
All the best,
Lane
