Fed up

I am currently recovering from a stroke I had in September last year.
My physio comes about twice a week.
What’s getting me down is l can’t feel the fingers of my right hand and I can’t feel my toes either.
I walked with a quad stick but my toes are constantly turned under when I do.
Only thing I can do well is balance.
I have just noticed that the right side of my butt is smaller than my left and my right eyebrow doesn’t work properly. I know its a slow process recovering but I feel like I will be 90 by the time I recover I’m 58 tomorrow.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Oh Nerrard67 I know just how you feel. I’m 2 years post stroke and am still staggering around with my stick. My left hand is useless- can’t hold anything in it and often get a horrible pain if I try to grasp anything. My left foot used to turn over but the hospital have given me a sort of strap/splint which does stop that happening. My left eye is odd! Can see perfectly well but it’s gritty and watery.
Sorry all that is no help to you whatsoever except to let you know all these things are common and makes recovery so slow. Good luck - Janet

Hello Nerrad

Welcome to 2025 and your stroke rehab. You have a long way to go, but you must realize that although it’s as tough as hell, it can all be done. However, I can’t give you a tip that solves all ; the answer to this riddle is hugely more complex. You are in your prime and probably have a lot of energy to put into your rehab so that’s on your side (youth). I am 60, 25 months post severe stroke, I have had 1 foot in hell for a while, but I’m firmly in the land of the living now!!

You have atrophy of right gluteus-major ; is it also numb, can you feel it? My guess is not, but if you want a massive tip look into pandiculation exercises : of course, youtube it & research ; tense up your right butt (if you can) just a bit, don’t overdo it. Now slowly release that tension, every step of the way, feel and gain awareness of that release. Practice this stint over a few times,. Come back the next day and repeat, with mindful awareness. You might be able to increase your brain map of the muscle groups around your right butt.

Still reading? You can send me feedback, and do please state if it’s not helping or making sense ; I’m just having a random stab at things, since never met you. Anyway, I wish you well; the fact that you have good balance is huge; you’re well on your way is my guess,

ciao, Roland

Thanks for the tip .
I can feel both sides of my butt am just not used to not being able to do stuff.
I have a foot splint and I have just had botox injections in my wrist and leg.
Just hope they work to relax the muscles in both.
I do have feeling on the outside but just can’t move things inside fingers or toes.
My foot is swollen too and during the day my foot turns sideways when I walk so it’s a good job I have balance.

okay there’s some good there and some not so good. I always stayed away from botox. Great you can feel both butt cheeks ; I couldn’t. Pandiculation still applies ; the more you can eat into (chip away) that pain map, the more you can take control. Your foot is swollen ; if you can lie upside down to drain it ; just put your feet up on a couch while you lie on the floor… if you can. Very important for circulation. In fact the best thing for that is grounding. Again, look it up ; it’s a life safer.

There is no School of Stroke survival unfortunately ; I would like to start one. It’s one thing to survive a stroke, but quite another to survive and overcome the relentless obstacles that we’re then confronted with to get our lives back. Great about your balance!! Your foot turning sideways could be your psoas hip flexor being super tight… I can’t tell from a few words. Anyway, keep at it !!!

@nerrad67 happy birthday. I hope you enjoy your day despite your challenges.

I wonder whether you have some muscle deterioration which is affecting your right side. What has your physio recommended in relation to your problems?

One thing we all learn about stroke is that getting ourselves back to where we want to be is a long road. You have started that journey but Sept isn’t that long ago so you are in very early stages yet.

I had loss of sensation in my hand / fingers and was advised to just keep touching things with lots of different textures. This helped my sensation return. I didn’t have total loss like you but it might help and I guess won’t do any harm. It takes many many repetitions though so you have to persevere.

I have an orthotic to try & kerp my toes lifted. I’m often treading on my toes.

If you’re balance is good you’re on to a good start. The rest will come. I keep a diary so on my fed up days I can look back and see how far i have come.

Best wishes

Ann

My toes turn under, making it difficult to walk. I bought some toe-crests, which were a game-changer for me. They are made of silicone and very comfortable. I usually buy them on Amazon. They cushion the underneath of your toes, so that your toes can’t curl under so much. I also do toe exercises, like picking up a tea towel with my toes, then letting it go again. I don’t have a lot of feeling in my fingers/toes, but they are a lot better than they were.
Saebo has some useful exercises. See Exercises to Help Fix Curled Toes After Stroke – Saebo

Toe socks/gloves are also useful, spreading out the toes those few millimetres between the toes makes a difference in getting them separated and working more individually rather than clumped together are curling under the foot. So helps with balance and stability, but I’m only speaking from my own experience, I’ve been wearing them for 3yrs now :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @EmeraldEyes
Please tell where I can get these socks - I think they will benefit my Mum.
Do you have a preferred brand?
Thank you.

Oh I just go mine on Amazon, just key in “toe socks” or “toe cloves” into the search bar. I don’t don’t have any particular preference, although I do like mine colourful  The ones I posted were just an example
Amazon.co.uk : toe socks

Thanks Lorraine @EmeraldEyes - I thought you’d modelled them

These are the ones I wore to the gym today

Just wondering why I’m getting this email

Can you let support know that I’m getting your emails

@nerrad67 as you started this topic you will get emails each time someone comments on your topic. You will also get notifications if someone replies to a post that you might have made in reply to someone else.

If you wish to stop the emails you can turn them off in your preferences. Not sure what device you’re accessing the forum on but on my phone if you click on your profile picture you should then see a person. Click on that

Then click preferences

Then find emails & notifications & change your settings as required. You may need to scroll across depending on your device.
