It has been more than three years since my stroke but I just got this side effect. My family said I had a seizure while sleeping with symptoms I didn’t feel at all. If it wasn’t for my family who heard me struggling I wouldn’t have known I experienced a seizure. Later the neurologist explained it is due to the placement of my brain lesion. So I am now taking seizure medication and I feel it has become
so difficult to wake up from sleep. Has anyone experienced something similar? I would appreciate the input. Thank you.
@Monika sorry to hear that you are now having seizures sometime after your stroke. It is not something that has happened to me (so far) but I know it can happen after a stroke & often takes a while to show up. Really hope your meds control your seizures. If they are giving you side effects then you should see if there are any alternatives you can take.
Best wishes
Ann
This is a sore subject for me at the moment.
Last September
I had an stroke in my sleep, no symptoms or prior warning whatsoever, I didn’t attend ER for2 days as I wasn’t sure what was going on, just a headache which isn’t uncommon as I suffer from migraines occasionally anyway, I assumed it was related to that.
When I did finally attend hospital, after scans I was told about the stroke and advised of a possible Focal seizure as well.
The DVLA were told and my driving license was revoked for six months.
Some weeks later upon my discharge from treatment at the stroke clinic, I was told that I hadn’t had a seizure after all, some junior consultant had fill in the paperwork incorrectly, so I had lost my license incorrectly , that was ten months ago and I’m still trying to get my license back, without success so far, respite letters, numerous phone calls and emails , still no license
I’m not surprised it is a sore subject for you. What a mess for you to sort out. I really hope the DVLA return your license soon. You could try asking your MP to intervene.
How did DVLA find out at all?
After 10 months of battling with the DVLA, I finally had my license returned yesterday, one day before my 80 th birthday today, god , how did I get so old!
I took my car out today with my wife as passenger for a change, it felt weird, my coordination was slightly off, understandable after such a lengthy lay off, but no mishaps and we got back home safely after a lovely seafood lunch at a friend’s crab shack in Salthouse, Norfolk
, I figured that if I could drive safely on those narrow twisty roads I would be ok elsewhere, all I have to do now is dust off the Bel Air and pluck up courage to attempt a drive in that, fingers crossed!
Congratulations on getting your license back and so nice you have been able to celebrate by taking your car out for a meal
It seems that despite the clerical error that led to your license being revoked (I assume the doctors did not apologise and give you a letter you could use to get your license back?).
By all accounts the six month period where your license was revoked was effectively served and you should have got your license back even on that basis in April/May, depending on when the letter was issued?
Clearly you seem to have spent a lot of time and effort to get your license back.
So is it the case your license has been returned because your risk period (6 months) has passed or is it the case you got the license back because you spent a lot of time trying to overturn the erroneous ban?
Just asking to understand whether the DVLA has returned the license to acknowledge the error or whether they returned the license because the 6 month “ban” was served. What did the letter say?
No letter from them about returning my license, just the standard form stating my entitlement to drive, they were aware from about the third month of the erroneous circumstances but passed the case on to the Medical Team anyway which resulted in more questions and delays, everything from them was done through snail mail, I lost count of the phone calls I made to them, luckily I discovered their phone number, always answered by a different person, but all saying the same thing, your case is in the system and you will have to wait for a response! very frustrating!
After about 8-9 months they did tell me I could send them a complaint by email !, but they didn’t respond to that, then on the 12th June during yet another phone call, she suddenly said, I can see we sent you a letter yesterday renewing your entitlement to drive!and I could drive from that moment on, my renewed license still hasn’t arrived by the way, snail mail again.!,but she did , only then email me the standard license form stating that there were no restrictions on my license.
After all this I won’t be telling them af any further situations that may occur in the future unless very serious such as losing consciousness or suchlike , it’s not worth the extra worry and stress, this episode has been the worst part of having the stroke, from which, apart from mild headaches, I am 95% recovered.
I cannot emphasise the relief I am feeling after getting my license back , I can now hopefully get back to nearly normal life and drive my classic car again.(
Wow! I am not a car enthusiast, but this car is a beauty.
I can see why you might not be happy about not being allowed to drive this car.
I had a lovely Vauxhall Cavalier Mk III which I sadly had to let go last year as I could no longer keep it on the road. Couldn’t get anyone to maintain it for me and the Mayor of London classed the car as environmentally unfriendly and slapped a £15 a day charge for the privilege of driving it. I am sorry I had to let it go, but had no choice
Anyway, I wish you many happy years of driving.
If I see you driving past, I’ll give you a wave.
Take care
