My partner is now 8 months post stroke. Telling me hes had enough. He told me too kill him. But tomorrow he might have a better day.
All started just because I couldn’t understand a work he was trying to say.
Aye, the exhaustion and frustration can become relentless. I recall day after day of pain in the brain and physical limitations taking their toll on my, usually, optimistic outlook and I squeezed every tiny pleasure or distraction out of existence. That’s all I could do aside from be brave and battle on through the fog. My early posts on the forum reflect tapping into my inner Viking, a wounded warrior marching ahead with no end goal in sight and refusing to buckle under the weight of my wounds. It’s not a bad idea to dip into Mindfullness and wellbeing practice to balance the negativity, but one has to be open to it. For me, I also need to tap into my inner Viking or pirate to see me through the tough times along with existential contemplation and mindful meditation.
He will, hopefully, find his grounding throughout it all as he learns to adapt and adjust, eight months is a mere cat’s whisker on the rehabilitation path of post stroke.
I mirror all Rups and Pando say….i live alone with no family nearby and my life was smashed by my stroke, no more work/travel. So then came the mental health stuff …arrrgh…I too thought, why go on , panic, anxiety, loneliness, exhaustion, despair…we are human and these are all moods, feelings we have to look at and process…your partner has you and I can’t help but feel it’s a positive thing he is able to express his feelings to you…altho totally scary eh….see if you can find any distractions to begin with, no matter how small ….loads of advice on internet re calmness mindfulness acceptance etc…one minute one hour one day at a time…and of course this forum….it keeps me going x
Hi - my stroke a lot less severe than some but the psychological effects are massive. Fear. Feeling depressed. Despondent , fog, thinking Things will never be the same again. There seems very little support for the psychological aftermath so it is massively important that u have raised this we owe you and your partner thanks.
I hope that as time goes on things improve. They did for me and many others so I hope for your partner. Rups and Pando and susie say it better. It’s maybe the path we have to tred?
Please Keep writing and contributing we all help each other here every contribution is a massive help.. thanks again to your partner and to you.
Hi @Clairekirby1990 I;m just finding out how hard this can hit too, my symptoms post stroke were milder and largely I look unaffected but this week it kinda felt that the wheels have fallen off. Been arguing with anyone/ everyone for no good reason , tired and lost all my energy, even cried for the first time in a long time and felt useless.
Still trying to get my head around this the realised it has been slavishly hot this week and not slept - it’s both physical and emotional exhaustion, have a good few days off work so am resting and recharging. Hope that it gets better for you soon.
at 5 years still up and down.. struggling to find the right word can be a trigger it says you are not the same, i find when i have not drunk enough water i drag my feet my face feels like rubber i lose words, slur others and handbag arm is back.
on the other hand i’ve now got to the point of learning to paddleboard, am writing have a job in the city, a pt that has me holding a plank for 3 lots of 60 seconds, i deadlift 60kg and leg press 90kg.. i started on the ward with a single 500g weight (my drinking bottle)
yet some things remain to highlight the stark internal changes that no one else can see
