Beginners luck?
Never played it or anything like it and was trying to understand the rules but gave it a go and got a Perfect!

It was the homophones of bodies of water that I found tricky - Bae, Creak, See and Straight. I was doing this late at night and getting tired - but it worked out.

Don’t like 3 out if 4 somehow doesn’t help me a bit
In this instance the odd one out had to be switched out and of the remaining words, I had managed to “pencil in” the two groups of four and so by a process of elimination the 1 out of the 3 /4 was swapped out and it worked out [on this occasion] - time will tell if this would work all the time. It’s a nice enough distraction during a tea/coffee break

Once I got the cakes, it was a bit easier with the Divulge as I had managed to link 3/4.
The last one - purely by default as they were the only four words left - I don’t do Apple products. No iPhone, iMac etc and so I would never have associated these with a MAC keyboard.

I can’t believe I didn’t get the cake connection especially as I love cake 
You’re right though if you can get one the others become much easier.
