Could it be this systolic pressure thing? I know little about BP as I’ve never really understood it properly.
Quite honestly Rupert - I feel all this BP thing is a nonsense.
So many things affect the result of BP measurements including
- the time of day
- how relaxed you are (whether you can relax)
- which limb you take the pressure from
- whether you are sitting or lying down and so on.
I am sure it serves a purpose, but I can’t see what it is. As I mentioned in one of my posts, initial readings for Mum were off the scale, but with a bit “perseverance” or correct positioning or getting her to relax you can get the “true readings” which are normal/good. Also her pulse is a a nice steady 65. Oxygen saturation is 99%.
That tells you all you need to know ![]()
I just don’t understand BP and not sure I need to. After a brief anxiety period when I bought a machine and started checking it at home compulsively, only to have contradictory readings and spikes and dips all throughout the day, I decided to adhere to my stroke consultant’s advice and not bother. Unless I develop high BP, I’m sure I can manage what I’ve got through ways of reducing stress &c.
Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. This is one of those occasions - there is too much fuss made about BP and in the grand scheme of things who really knows what it actually means.
I mentioned in one of my previous posts that in hospital when they do obs, they were “fudging” the figures when taking BP in that if they got a high reading they would take it from somewhere else until they got a safe reading (a little bit like the GP did yesterday). But to me that defeats the whole purpose of taking a BP reading i.e. if you look for a safe reading so you can tick off the box, how does that work since I would have thought an unacceptable reading would warrant some action?
It is total and utter nonsense and we as lemmings follow …
”Yes! We are all individuals” - the crowd.
“I’m not” - solitary man in crowd.
Thank you Rupert for making an opportunity for me to share yet another song that I love so much. This one is Johnny Cash (brilliant) singing a song written by Neil Diamond (another brilliant artist).
Enjoy!
When I first saw this reply, I saw Solitary Man, but what sprang into my head was …
Great song Rupert - thank you for sharing.
Very different to the Moody Blues songs I am familiar with, but to be fair, I don’t know that many ![]()
