Beating the odds

I my name is Terry, I am a bit unsure of myself but wanted to reach out as advised by the Stroke association.

In July this year I took an extremely nasty fall backwards down 14 flights. This caused major injuries including stoke, heart attack, kidney damage and a lung clot. I was rushed to a specialist unit for treatment. I went into a coma and after a week or so my family were called to so good bye as I was expected to pass that night m(I had heart had stopped beating for 14 minutes!). I however had other plans and after 4 weeks I came round.

To the surprise of the staff I had all of my normal thoughts. I however had suffered a mare amount of nerve damage and was suffering from Quadriplegia. This was distressing.

I spent a total of 4 months in hospital and the helped me to regain almost full use of my body which was a surprise to all. A am no at home, lost a notal of 5 months memory, I have a small limp, and light Aphasia.

I am hear to give out my story (which is one of hope ultimately) and to speak to stroke survivors as I have nobody in my life I can speak to.

A bit of an understatement there, @Terrys. Thank you for sharing your story, I’m happy that it turned out relatively well, all things considered. It seems that you have resilience in spades, which we can all benefit from.

You’ll find many here who will listen to your story.

There is a different story for each of us but in many ways dealing with difficulties becomes a way of life and is something we all experience.

Learning you are not alone as you get through each day and feeling free to say what you really think about it all does help to lighten the burden a little.

There are others here with similar things to deal with. There are regular ups and downs. Recognising this and talking about it helps both yourself and others.

It’s about four years since stroke tipped who I was and what I could do down the toilet and pulled the chain.

Those four years have allowed me to experience great successes but then I would suddenly be at the bottom of this deep black hole wondering how I got here and if there could ever be an escape.

Well I’m still here. I still do stuff. I can even have a laugh about it all sometimes.

BUT

I’ll never be an astronaut and jet off to Mars.
I won’t be a goalie in a world cup winning team.
I won’t be setting off on a solo expedition up Everest or to the North or South Poles.

I will stop listing all those things I will not be able to do.

As best as you are able have a nice life.

Stay in touch.

keep on keepin on
