Someone suggested to me once that if you can get yourself to whatever you want to be going to, there is usually someone who you will get talking to who will offer you a lift back. It worked for me but I suppose it depends whether you live in a fairly compact urban area or a rural area as to whether there will be someone at the group who lives nearby. And you may need to go a few times before an offer of a lift.
