A maverick is an unbranded range animal, but more commonly refers to a person who is unconventional, independent, and does not go along with a group or its expected norm. The term can also be used as an adjective to describe someone or something that exhibits this independent spirit. Also a character in the extraordinary 1986 film of my childhood-Top Gun.
