Advocating for my mum

My Mum had a stroke last Sunday; she stayed in hospital ‘til Thursday before being discharged and we have her first appointment at a ‘stroke clinic’ at one of our local hospitals. I’m keen to support her and most importantly advocate for her, I’m interested in benefiting from this community’s collective wisdom and knowing if there is anything I should be asking at tomorrow’s appointment - what do you wished you’d asked or knew when you started on your stroke recovery?

Hi @EmmaH and welcome to the community. Sorry to hear of your mums stroke & i hope she is getting on ok at this very early stage.

Some of the things that I wanted to know at my first appointments were around what caused the stroke, what’s the risk of another, what follow ups / tests are they planning to do, what about physio/occupational therapy (if appropriate). What can I do to prevent it happening again. Do you know what sort of stroke she had? I asked them to show me the scans and explain it to me which they did. You don’t say what deficits she has but questions around help with those might be appropriate.

Write down anything you think of and take it with you as often you forget things once the consultant starts asking you questions.

Good luck with the appointment. Hope all goes well.

Best wishes

Ann

Thanks Nigel - yes we are in the process of getting this sorted - we have an added complication of my brother living in Spain and needing his ‘wet’ signature :woman_facepalming:, but it’s in hand. Thanks for the advice :+1:
