1 Year since first stroke

Stroke anniversary 1

Just thought I’d make a few notes as this was a strange anniversary. 1 year from first stroke but not a year stroke free yet as I had a second in the October.

But thats not what prompts me to write: on the anniversary i woke early and as the clock progressed I started to relive things. Not intended but that’s what happened. In particular a vivid memory of a dead left arm so heavy and without any feeling. Not numb just not belonging to me at all. Not mine. Dead weight. A thing.

Of course I was fine but almost like a dream I felt again the memory of the weight of it as I lifted it with my right (good) arm & hand. The discovery that I had had a stroke that half my body wasn’t working that I could not form words. How with difficulty I rang for the ambulance.

And as the clock ticked I remembered……

At this time I’d have been waiting for the ambulance.

At this time the paramedics were letting themselves in how good they were how they got my belongings together.

Reliving it at the times events happened but a year on.

Being in the ambulance the ride through town the siren the reflection of the blue lights.

Thats it really not so strong the reliving of my left leg being dead too or the numbness in face & nothing of the hospital which was similarly excellent but I was getting up by then having a cup of tea and reflecting what a weird (& frightening) memory episode I had just had.

The rest of the anniversary was unremarkable just another day.

Anyway there it is i just wanted to share not make a point or convey any value from it. I am doing spectacularly well thanks to receiving thromboliysis quickly and the professionalism of the Doctors and the stroke nurse. I am back doing pretty much everything I did pre stroke - I am currently in Florida with family - but at home no mountain summits yet. God willing. Snowdon summit possibly October but I’m not setting that in stone. It will happen when it does…..

It probably does no good but, rather like yourself, I tend to remember all these anniversaries. Of course every case will be very different and, to be quite honest, I remember very little of my Day One! I truly never realised I had suffered a stroke so when they told me I just went into shock really and let things happen as they happened. But the next morning was when I began to react sensbibly.
But I’m pleased to hear about your impressive progress!

I think my 1st anniversary was a bit like yours. Reflecting on events that fateful day.

I can honestly say though that all my subsequent anniversaries have passed with much less thought & just getting on with the day.

You are doing great things. Enjoy your holiday in Florida.
